The midyear “mehh” of officers

Does this sound familiar?

Your officers came up with AMAZING activities at your Summer Officer Retreat!

They were excited. They were motivated. They were organized.

And now you’re rounding the mid-year mark of the school year and your officers are missing deadlines, dropping the ball and are falling apart at the seams!

For me, my officers hit this mid-year “MEHH” around November and it continued until March.

So how do you call out this behavior and motivate them without getting frustrated or losing respect?

OFFICER 1-ON-1s allowed me to meet with each officer on my leadership team during December before we all came back together over Christmas Break for our Winter Officer Retreat.

I provided each officer with an Officer Self-Evaluation Form when they came back from Thanksgiving Break and scheduled a 15-minute individual conference with them, usually before or after school, or during my lunch.

This questionnaire allowed these students to reflect on their first semester as an officer and allowed them to express their frustrations with me or other officers in a “safe” space.

On the flip-side, this time also allowed me to express my concerns with their behavior as an officer and reinforce the expectations of an officer.

From my experience, many times students didn’t know they were not meeting expectations which allowed us to have a professional conversation about how they were going to get back on track to finish their term strong.

In Ohio, our National Chapter Award was due in March and this allowed me to intervene early and make sure students had the bandwidth and focus necessary to complete the plan for the activities included in this award application.
